MY JOURNEY

HELLO FRIENDS!

My name is Mae Espinoza. My story began when my parents brought my siblings and me to the United States from the Philippines with a single goal: to work hard and provide for our family. They instilled in us the belief that education and good grades would lead to a successful career.

I became a single mom at a young age which pushed me to work tirelessly, striving to create a better future for my daughter. Throughout my adult life, I dedicated myself to fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of others, achieving some success and enjoying its financial rewards. Later, I married a loving and hardworking husband, further enriching my journey.

We thought we were on the right path with a nice house in Southern California, good cars, and some savings. My husband had a pension, a variable annuity, and whole life insurance, giving us a sense of security for our future retirement. However, neither of us paid much attention to the performance of these investments. As we got older, we were forced to take a closer look. It was then that I realized we knew nothing about our retirement.

I was shocked to discover that my husband's whole life insurance and annuity hadn't grown as much as we expected. We had no idea about market risks, limited investment options, high fees, as well as high management fees. The only growth in our savings account in our bank came from the deposits we made, as the interest rate was a mere 0.01%. To make things worse, we began withdrawing from our savings account.

Motivated by this wake-up call, I embarked on my financial education journey. This is where my mission to educate and empower my family and my community about their finances truly began.
